Elektron Sidstation
22. August 2010I got a Sidstation this week and lately found some time to play around with. I’m new to the concept and possibilities of the MOS6581 but i like the noisy capabilities.

This next little tune uses multitrack recording, but no external effects.

Arduino Wavetable Synthesis
11. Juli 2010Today i played a little bit with Arduino. I took an operational amplifier, and some parts of the bleep labs nebulophone source code, to figure out whether or not Arduino would be capable of wavetable synthesis. I relized that the nebulophone uses some stripped down version of wavetable synthesis, so i rewrote these parts to make a continuous variation of the wave possible. Then i took a new wavetable with 5 squarewaves of different frequencies (each squarewave is one octave higher than the previous one) and scanned through it with a potentiometer.

Walking on snow
27. Juni 2010I promised to dig further into physical modelling with the nord modular. Today i tried to improve my water drops patch, i posted earlier. It turned out to became something completely different, but still related to water:

Make Noise, MOTM, Acidlab
25. Juni 2010Maybe this post is not that interesting for everybody, but i got new toys in my doepfer rack: Make Noise QMMG and Maths and the Fonitronic attenuating mixer. These fit perfectly to the MOTM Morphing Terrarium and the Wogglebug i bought lately. This patch is a small demo of the Morphing Terrarium and the QMMG and Maths. An Acidlab Bassline 2 (playing first) acts as baselayer sound and sequencer. Morphing Terrarium sets in, wavetables are controlled by the maths (which is triggered by the bassline, again). QMMG is in Lowpass Mode, feedback controlled by the Maths other half. That’s it basically.

You can hear clearly that i need a new mixer – faders are crackling…
Granular guitar
7. Juni 2010Though being an old technique and heard quite often recently, granular synthesis and effects are simply wonderful sounding. I am no experienced user of any granular tool, but here are two sounds i created with my guitar and two tools, the first being the ensoniq asr 10 sampler (one of the few hardware instruments that can do granular effects) and audiomulch (which is a great software anyway).

Neighborhood
16. Mai 2010I moved to a new city recently and am still accommodating to the new environment, especially all the new sonic events. Playing children are a sound i have not known in my old place. On a spring day last week, they sounded like this:

As usual this sound was recorded with the Olympus LS-10 field recorder.
Back again!
5. Mai 2010Last month i moved, therefore no soundblogging. But i reconstructed my homestudio in my new flat again, so i can revive this blog. While checking my instruments i came up with this physical modelling sound on the Clavia Nord Modular, which is a fantastic instrument after all. The patch sounds a bit like drops falling on a drum. I will tweak the patch soon and post the results hear; i’m sure it can sound more realistic. The patch was inspired by Rob Hordijks great Nord Modular Tips&Tricks; these are worth a look even if you don’t own a Nord Modular.
The sound example consists of 3 layered recordings with different pitches.

MOTM Morphing Terrarium
4. März 2010Synthesis Technologies, home of the MOTM synthesizer, may be known to some. The MOTM modular system is a sophisticated piece of art/instrument. I was happy to read, that they offer modules for eurorack modular systems now too! Immediately i ordered the E350 Morphing Terrarium, a wavetable oscillator. Being a big fan of Waldorfs wavetable synthesizers, i was happy to get this synthesis technique integrated in my modular system.
Additionally i ordered a wogglebug! An insane module. Both team up very well, and together with a doepfer a112 sampler and a mfb dual LFO they sound like this:

Frequensteiner
25. Februar 2010Something similar to my last post. A Livewire Frequensteiner filter in bandpass mode, triggered by a short envelope. Resonance modulated by hand. The sound was timestretched three times in Cubase, filtered by a 30 band EQ and processed with lots of reverb.

Korg DS-10
2. Februar 2010My latest acquisition is a Nintendo DS and the Korg DS-10. This is one tiny but powerful and surprisingly good sounding stepsequencer+drums+va synth combo. I wish this thing would be released as new Korg Electribe in hardware,,, Apart from pure dance-sounds, it’s also capable of more experimental or aleatoric sounds:
